I really like some of the architecture in Pensacola. This is the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Building. I couldn't find a lot of information on the building but I found that it was designed by William Graves and built in 1978. I personally love large concrete buildings in this Brutalist architectural style. And I really like the weathering on this building. According to Wikipedia: "Brutalist buildings are characterised by minimalist constructions that showcase the bare building materials and structural elements over decorative design. The style commonly makes use of exposed, unpainted concrete or brick, angular geometric shapes and a predominantly monochrome colour palette." There's a general rule in Real Estate Photography, that we never shoot vertical because of the way images are displayed on the MLS. But social media favors vertically formatted images and videos. So you may find yourself cropping your images vertically. To help you decide best composition for vertical format, keep these things in mind. - Include objects such as chairs or coffee tables in the forground to ground your images and to balance the visual weight of the photo. - Look for leading lines to guide the eye toward interesting objects or spaces in the background. - Long vertical lines can help keep the composition feel natural. Include small "vignette" scenes of intimate spaces. - Images with large tall objects were made for vertical formats. - Landscapes should include interesting objects in the forground so the eye moves vertically rather than horizontally. I usually like to include open space in the background (like an open doorway), to give the feeling of three-dimentional space and movement. As if you can walk right through the image. Sometimes you want to have the fireplace burning for your real estate photos. But it's usually not practical to start a fire on the day of the shoot. That's where photo editing comes in. When adding realistic fire, you have to keep in mind how fire looks to a camera versus how it looks to the human eye. Because this fire is supposedly burning during the day with all the lights on in the room, it wouldn't necessarily photograph well. The flames may actually be invisible or so bright that you can't get a good exposure. When illustrating realistic fire, you want to add glow, color and motion blur to make it convincing. Also, you want to add just enough effect to make it look real but not to take away from the details of the rest of the house that is being showcased. I hope I did a good job of that here. Welcome to Destin, Florida! The trend in Real Estate photography is something called the flambient technique. That's when an image is created by blending an ambient exposure with one or several flash exposures. The flash overpowers the ambient and will give you very clean and bright (generally white) walls and ceilings. The ambient exposure leaves in subtle natural shadows and highlights. It's a good way to take a very clean shot. After all, real estate photography is a form of advertising and clean, bright images are preferred. However, I prefer to shoot with natural light only. I will bracket my exposures and blend them together to produce a high-dynamic image. But I really don't like the outside exposure to be so dark that it looks unnatural, or all the ambient color removed that the image starts to look more like a rendering. If your property has a swimming pool, you'll want to make sure to include it in your listing photos. But don't neglect how it looks! A pool is such a big asset to your property (especially if you intend to rent your place), you want to make sure it is photographed at its best. One thing that I've run into a lot are dirty pools with floating and submerged leaves; scum on the pool walls; the pool vac doing its thing right in the middle of the pool; floating toys and tubes and furniture in disarray. Of course, Photoshop can do wonders, but that adds unnecessary time and money. One other thing... When photographing a pool, be aware of your surroundings! I wish I had thought to ask the homeowner to pose for this portrait. Oh well. When I am photographing interiors, I have a bunch of rules to follow. After all we're trying to sell the space. But sometimes I'll find a composition that just makes me take the shot. I didn't turn this image over to the client, but I really like it. Shows that a real person lived there and for a long time. So this is why I shoot without lights. Using flash or artificial light would wash away the shadows that fall onto the couch. Sure, some people may prefer that those shadows be removed, but I like to leave them in. It shows how the light actually is in the room. Also, it hints that there is a big window (in this case, sliding glass door) off frame. This is a photo @gigichicken took with her phone. She wanted me to backup her phone and I came across this and other pictures she took. I love the values in this photo. Originally it was in color but it lacked the depth and contrast with how much green was in the picture. If this was an Autumn scene it probably would have worked better in color. But look at the depth the right half of the picture has with the brightest leaves in front and the darkest tones piercing into the image pulling your eye right into the picture. Also notice how the horizontal line of the landscape peaks behind the woodshed keeping you in the picture. So does that dark spot on the bottom prevents you from wanting to leave. I think this is a remarkable picture and shows how even a simple camera phone image can still make a great photo! . . . . . #bwphotography #bwphoto #woodlandphotography #photoediting #photographyasart

I like studying the old masters' paintings to see what can be gleaned and used in my photography. I've really been into one-point perspective and one of my favorite painters is Pieter De Hooch. Almost all of his interiors are one-point perspective, but he often includes a doorway as a way out. This adds to the 3-dimentional look of his paintings and draws the viewer through the painting, not just around it. Using this method in real estate or architectural photography, asks the viewer to step inside the image and hints at more to be seen. Tell me, do you like my expounding on photographic technique? I've been studying the old masters' architectural paintings. Especially axial plane technique (aka one-point perspective). I never really appreciated it's use in photography because it can tend to give your photo a bowling alley look. But if done right can really give your photo stability. Gotta make sure those verticals and horizontals are spot on. The last pic is a sample of Vermeer's "Music Lesson." At first I don't think you even notice it's painted on the axial plane. Testing out the #FujifilmXT30 for night photography. I was shooting handheld so I ended up going a bit high on the ISO. Which was a good test of ISO noise. Also, I exposure bracketed and was surprised how fast this camera shot off five exposures. Makes me pretty confident that I coud shoot HDR handheld after all.

This was done using HDR. After merging 7 exposures, I just needed to adjust the overall exposure, color cast and clarity. I also painted in some subtle spot lights here and there just for that extra "pop." #realestate #realestatephotographer #realestateemeraldcoast #realestatephotography
